Your wedding makeup and hair is a key component to the overall look of your day. No one wants their mascara running down their cheeks or their foundation melting! Here’s how to keep your makeup looking fresh for your photographer and have it last long into the night.
Preparation is key
Leading up to the wedding day, it’s a great idea to prep your skin with a robust skincare routine. Cleansing, toning and moisturising every day is a must, with any problem areas tackled ahead of time. The Ordinary have a fantastic range of really affordable products for a multitude of issues. Schedule any facials or peels for a couple of weeks ahead of the day itself, as these can often make your skin red and blotchy before the treatment shows its benefits. Also, make sure to always take your makeup off before going to sleep!
Primed and ready
Before applying your wedding makeup, I’ll always make sure to smooth and prepare the skin with an excellent primer. This will ensure your makeup has a beautiful base to sit on and will allow products to blend more smoothly to create a brilliant finish. I use Too Faced Primed and Peachy for this, although there’s so many excellent ones on the market for all skin types. For example, a silicone-based primer is best for oily skin, and a lightweight serum is best for dry skin types.
Get set – and go
Once your wedding makeup is complete, you’ll want it to stay put. Using a setting spray such as Urban Decay’s All Nighter will keep your makeup in place for up to 16 hours. Perfect for when you want to dance the night away. A good setting spray should not only keep makeup in place, but will actually enhance the look, without settling into fine lines. Again, there are so many available depending on the look you’re going for, whether that’s matte or dewy.
It’s a good idea to buy your chosen lip colour for your wedding makeup look so that you can touch it up if the colour comes off throughout the day. If all of the steps above have been achieved, you shouldn’t need to touch up your makeup at all. If you’re worried about shine, have your bridesmaid carry a small translucent powder for you for any emergencies!
Although looking great is an important factor on your wedding day, try not to worry TOO much. Focus on enjoying the day as much as you possibly can. I hear from all of my brides (and in my own experience!) that the day goes by in a flash. You’ll remember the smiles, love and laughter throughout the years of your life together and your happiness will show in your face.
I’d love to hear about the look you want to achieve on your special day. Please do get in touch to discuss in detail – I can’t wait to hear from you!
