When it comes to making the most of your makeup in extreme weather, your thoughts likely automatically go to summer. Hot, slick, sweaty humidity while fighting desperately to keep your carefully applied makeup on your actual face – where you originally put it. Lesser thought of is the battle that can be faced to make the most of your makeup in the winter! Surely the milder temperatures must be a good thing, right?
Well, not really. With winter comes freezing weather, rain, wind – and what do we do to combat that? We blast central heating, fan heaters and wrap as warm as we can. All of these things combined lead to changing temperatures across your applied makeup, with base products melting and drying on the face, dull complexion due to lack of sunlight and of course, it leads to the trickiest thing of all for a good finish…dry skin!
We’ve pulled together the top tips to ensure you’re getting the best out of your makeup all year round, with a few extra tricks to make the most of it this winter.

Exfoliate and Moisturise
Tackle winter weather woes from the beginning by changing up your skincare routine. Use a good exfoliator such as this gentle one from Elemis to get rid of those built-up dry patches – the last thing you want is harsh chemicals. Next, slather on a cult favourite moisturiser like this buttery one from Glossier to get the best protection possible from that harsh wind.
Colour Correct
Windchill and the icy cold will have even the most beautiful of complexions inflamed with fiery red patches. Treat those rosy cheeks (if you want to!) with a colour corrector under your base to ensure consistency across your skin tone. A green-toned corrector is best for redness, like this one from Clinique – as well as combating redness, its probiotic technology strengthens the skin’s barrier whilst UV protection shields from the sun.
Moisturising Base
A heavy layer of matte foundation can accentuate dry patches. Lighten it up and give yourself a dewier look by mixing equal parts moisturiser and foundation before applying, or use a pure tinted moisturiser instead. This one from Erborian, a Korean skincare brand, has been a game changer for so many people!
Tear-proof your look
It’s that pesky wind again! Facing the way the wind is blowing is a sure-fire way to ruin that carefully applied mascara. No one wants raccoon eyes at their wedding or their girly night out! Make sure that your lashes can take all that’s thrown at them by using a good waterproof mascara like this amazing one from By Terry.
Hydrate!
It’s the only thing we can recommend all year round, no matter what. Drink water and use this handy bottle to remind yourself. Hydrating will help you to reduce dryness in the skin and remove that dull look, even better than a great exfoliator can. Look after yourself from within and your makeup will simply glide on.
